What are these Ospreys up to? Yesterday volunteers and staff witnessed five fish being caught in the lagoon area of the lake below the lower viewpoint, four of them within one hour. Today they witnessed seven fish being caught mostly in batches of three. So far two little heads have been seen on the nest but feeding takes an awfully long time, could we have more than two chicks on the nest?

Or is it more to do with the condition of the lake, after heavy rain Bassenthwaite is prone to having a lot of silt and sediment entering the lake. It clouds the water and makes fishing difficult. Could it be that the long disappearances of the male was due to him having to travel further afield to find food for his family and now the sediment is settling to give clear water. Today’s fish or at least the latter ones were caught in the main part of the lake.

So dear visitor when you visit the Lake District Osprey Project at Whinlatter Forest Park and at Dodd Wood you not only enter the natural world but also one of dark mystery, murder and intrigue.

Or maybe that’s the same thing!
