Zoom with a view

Many people have been asking about when pictures of the new nest might become available. Well good news, the expert team within the Forestry Commission's radio and electronics branch say the new custom built camera has arived in Scotland and they hope to test and set it up next week.

Otherwise our Ospreys continue to enjoy fantastic weather with sunshine all day and warmth like we hav'nt experienced for months. If I was them I would be eyeing up the cool waters of Bassenthwaite Lake for more than just food.The beech and larch trees are now very noticeable from the viewpoint as their leaves have responded to the rain of last week and this weeks warmth and are a vibrant lime geen.

Web cams and cameras

Having just visited the new viewing point in Dodds Wood (8/5/08) I cannot see there being any web cams/cameras in position this year. A tall pole will be required for next year, if they return to the same nest. There is a rocky crag above the nest but it is too far away for a camera to see into the nest. For those on foot who manage the walk up to the viewing point it is well worth it as the nest is clearly visible with binoculars, kindly provided (thank you) at the viewing point along with scopes.

It's not our right , it's our privilage to see these birds so up close and personal.If the technology doesn't "match" up to our expectations then it's us who is at fault. maybe we actually see more than than we appreciate.

Having visted the viewpoint for the first time since the ospreys decided to move home I can only say how impressed I was in their choice of location. The views from the upper viewpoint were great, whether through scope, binoculars or even the naked eye. My wife and I had persuaded her brother and sister-in-law to trudge up the hill in the heat (They could not have been described as keen ornothologists!) They were suitably impressed and were even heard to say on the way down "It was well worth the walk." Thanks to all involved with Osprey watch. Lussi enjoyed splashing in the stream on the way down.
