A quiet Sunday morning in Cumbria, the sun is shining and all is at peace with the world. Except, high in the  blue skies above the Derwent River, two birds are taking against each other, one an Osprey, flying high and then dive bombing the bird below, yes you have guessed it, a Common Buzzard. But this Buzzard has sense. After taking a series of talon tipped strikes it takes evasive action by moving up to the same height as the Osprey. It’s hard to dive bomb a bird next to you. This clever Buzzard does not stop there but continues its climb above the Osprey and eventually climbs out of harm’s way. Having satisfied her defensive instincts the female Osprey intends to make good use of her time away from the nest.  She takes a leisurely flight over the river, constantly scanning for the odd fish, but no luck, over the marsh and along the A66 near Barf, still no luck. Across the lake towards Dodd, wise fish keep their heads down. She lands in the shallow water near where the River Derwent enters Bassenthwaite Lake. How about a leisurely splash and a bit of a bathe, very nice. Until the pesky neighbours in the form of a pair of gulls start to take an interest. Up out of the water, for a time flying parallel to a rather surprised Oystercatcher, and then back along the river. Still no careless fish. Oh well back to the old man and the potential kids. Just like any other quiet peaceful Sunday in the Lakes.
