A much better day although the snow-line had moved further down the slopes of Skiddaw overnight. It is a slightly surreal experience seeing the hot yellow blaze of the gorse bushes in full blossom set against the cold silver of the snow.

Our osprey pair have not used the nest much again today. A fish that No-ring brought in at 10.00 caused us some anxiety as it seemed to have a short length of wire attached to it. Pike teeth are so sharp that they can chomp through nylon line so fishermen use metal line near the hook. No-ring left the nest after eating his share of the fish with what looked like a piece hanging from the corner of his beak. Thank goodness, when he returned later it was gone. The fishermen on Bassenthwaite are generally very conscientious in tidying away loose line – but sadly even a small amount can be enough to incapacitate a bird.
